The Big Dig
Today, the children in Year 6 had the incredible opportunity to take part in an archaeological dig. Local geophysicist Simon Blockley, along with Mr and Mrs Pearman, welcomed them and other volunteers into the field adjacent to the school playground to search for the remains of a 16th century manor house. The children were thrilled to take part and used trowels and brushes to remove layers of earth and discover many interesting artefacts and materials.
Among these were the original roof tiles and pegs, wattle and daub plaster, glazed pottery and square-headed nails. They were also lucky enough to find some flint tools from the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) period, with sharp and serrated edges.
