The Squashed Tomato Challenge

On Wednesday it was lovely to see Year 6 children working in teams to solve a problem for farmers in the mountainous regions of South Asia. They were challenged to use their design skills alongside their scientific knowledge to make a pulley system that would transport a batch of tomatoes down a mountainside safely.

The children designed and made a variety of successful pulley systems and used their practical skills throughout the lesson to modify and improve on their initial ideas. It was good to read their clear understanding of how solving this problem would help address the United Nations Global Goals to reduce poverty and hunger and to improve health, education and economic growth for the farmers and their families in this region.

Well done for your ingenuity, teamwork and fantastic engineering skills, Year 6!
