Year 5 & 6 - K'nex Challenge

On Thursday, Year 5 and Year 6 were immersed in the world of mechanical engineering and technology when they took part in the K’nex Challenge 2026. Working in small groups, they were challenged to use their design and construction skills to create a functioning model.
The theme was ‘Rockets’, which gave the children great scope to use their imagination and creativity. The children were asked to build a rocket that was at least 20cm tall, with four detachable boosters and a detachable capsule (that could work as a satellite or for transporting astronauts). They had to think about the construction materials available, work on practicality and find solutions to any obstacles they encountered. When the models were completed, the children presented them to the class, explaining any problems they had experienced and how their rocket worked. They were scored on communication, teamwork, problem solving skills and the operation, function and design of their rockets. Both year groups came up with some fabulous ideas that demonstrated how well they had worked collaboratively.
Our engineer, David, was thoroughly impressed with their confidence, communication and teamwork.
Well done to Gracie and Max from Year 5, and Leela and Orla in Year 6, who were the class winners of the challenge.
